What We’ve Been Up To
We had such a fabulous time at the Rising Moon Festival this year. 3 days of great people and real connection. We spent the first two days serving popcorn at the Greener Postures booth. We bought this commercial popcorn maker and I devised a real food recipe using organic popcorn, coconut oil, sea salt, turmeric powder. It was a hit, especially with the kids!

When you unschool, summer isn’t time off from learning (there never really is time off from learning is there?) and this was a great experience for our 9 year old. Food handling, understand the cost of things, recipes and measurements, as well as old fashioned good customer service.

On Sunday, the last day of the festival, I gave a talk on fermentation in the Moon Studio. What an excellent group of people. So many great questions. People were really sharing my enthusiasm by the end of my talk. We tasted and shared year old fermented carrots, fermented applesauce, a very sour lemon peach jun kombucha and some fermented raspberry lemonade.
In case you missed the latest online workshop, you can still purchase the replay by following that link. The Fermented Beverages workshop was so much fun! Monica Perez of the Deep Dives with Monica Perez podcast joined me live, and thanks to her shouting it from the rooftops, we had a few of her listeners there with us as well. This made for interesting and engaging questions and we had a lot of fun exploring many aspects of fermentation and fermented drinks.
August’s Theme is Preserving the Harvest!

August’s theme is Preserving the Harvest. On the Greener Postures Podcast, on Instagram and the extra content I put out on YouTube will all be about different ways I am preserving what is fresh and growing around me. August is just the tip of the ice berg that is harvest season. Strawberries, carrots, cabbage, kohlrabi, cucumbers, raspberries and garlic are already here. Next up is pears, apples, blackberries, walnuts, squash, more cabbage and the list goes on. Join me as I share my what, how and why of putting food by. www.greenerpostures.com/membership.
Book Recommendations
When it comes to food preservation it’s hard to narrow things down to one book recommendation, because there are so many different methods that you can use to preserve different foods. My most used techniques are fermentation, canning, freezing and dehydrating. Here are my most frequently used book for some of those methods.

General Canning:
Ball Complete Book of Home Preserving is an excellent all around canning book and a must have for any homestead bookshelf.
Pressure Canning:
The Complete Guide to Pressure Canning is a great beginners pressure canning book with both meal in a jar recipes, and easy pressure canned single ingredient pantry staples.
Fermentation:
Fermented Vegetables has been recommended by me time and again. This is my favorite fermentation book and the best way to get started preserving veggies with fermentation.
Dehydrating:
Preserving Food without Freezing or Canning is an interesting book that covers preserving with oils, salt, vinegar as well as drying.
The Greener Postures Podcast
This month the podcast episodes are all about preserving the harvest. My first episode of the months is always a homestead update, but the following 3 Monday’s in August I will cover how I’m preserving and planning to preserve all that is in season.
I had a few special episodes out in July. Talking with Adam & Emily of Rising Tide Homestead was an excellent chat with my good friends talking about going from a tiny apartment in San Francisco to a five acre homestead with tons of animals is just 5 years. I also talked with my friend Abbie Sterk about Homemaking and Mothering. It was an excellent conversation, the first of hopefully many.

Featured Blog Post
I haven’t posted many recipes on my blog, actually just this one! This is something I’m currently making, starting new batches almost daily as my cucumbers come in. Wild Fermented Dill Pickles are my favorite of all fermented foods. Everyone loves them. If you like dill pickles and have never had traditionally made lacto fermented pickles, you just have to try this.
What’s Next?

September I’ll be covering Pantry Management. I feel like this is a really important topic to cover next to the topic of food preservation and harvest season. Keeping a stocked and orderly pantry allows us to save more and use things before they pass their prime. Rotation and good organization is key to a good working home kitchen.
