Summer is here and we’ve been busy! Thank you for reading our newsletter and supporting Greener Postures.
What’s New?

We are officially up to our eyeballs with the sausage that we made from the half hog we bought from Widnor Farms in Custer, WA. It was well worth the extra cost. This pork is outstanding. Rendering the lard and working with the meat, it is clear that this animal lived a good life.
The garden is looking fantastic and we’re enjoying lots of great lettuce, peas, carrots, chives, herbs and more.
Garlic scapes are a fun ingredient and they are around for a short amount of time. I made some garlic scape pesto, and of course, I had to ferment some! They are bubbling away on the shelf now and will be ready to taste in a few days. Check out my Instagram Reels for a video on how I put those fermented garlic scapes together.

We processed our meat chickens in early June with great success. It’s so satisfying to raise, slaughter and dress your own meat. The freezer is full and so are our hearts and bellies. To hear more about chicken process, garden updates and everything else we did in June, listen to the “July Homestead Update” episode on The Greener Postures Podcast that will be posted on July 3rd.
In case you missed the latest online workshop Fermentation for Food Preservation, you can still purchase the replay by following that link. This month I will host the Fermented Beverages workshop which will be live online July 30th 2023 at 4pm PT.

July’s Theme is Fermented Drinks!

This month’s theme is Fermented Drinks! Fermented beverages is one of the most fun ways I experiment in my kitchen. I absolutely love making healthy, probiotic rich tonics, teas and sodas for my family to enjoy guilt free. Using local, fresh, in-season fruit to make soda is one of the my favorite ways to savor the flavors of summer. On the podcast, in my videos on Instagram and YouTube and in the membership I will be sharing all about fermenting drinks this month. If you’re not yet a member, you can learn more here www.greenerpostures.com/membership.

Please, join me this month for this super fun online workshop: Getting Started with Fermented Beverages This will be live on Zoom Sunday July 30th at 4pm PDT. Do you like fizzy drinks? Want to enjoy them without guilt? Want to make things from scratch? Want to grow healthy probiotics? Want to enjoy nourishing sodas with a reasonable sugar content? Are you an autonomous individual with an open mind? Do you want to do more for yourself, and rely less on the system?
Join us for a Greener Postures Workshop! Autonomous individuals coming together in person and online to grow, learn and share together freely. I hope to see you there!

All my online workshops include the 2 hour live zoom class and a link for the playback (great for those who can’t attend live), a PDF booklet and lifetime access to the Greener Postures Community group chat. Here’s a little video trailer I made for it last year. Watch the video for all the details.
Book Recommendation
This month I want to recommend a new book that is all about fermented drinks. Sharon Flynn already holds the spot on my top 10 favorite books on my kitchen bookshelf with her book FERMENT FOR GOOD.
Her new book WILD DRINKS: THE NEW OLD WORLD OF SMALL-BATCH BREWS, FERMENTS AND INFUSIONS does not disappoint. Beautifully made with gorgeous photography. Every recipe is well explained and interesting. This is a must have for anyone who really wants to dive deep into all things fermented drinks. Click on the book titles above to view and/or purchase on Amazon.

The Greener Postures Podcast
This month the podcast episodes are all about Fermented Drinks! Kvass, tepache, kombucha, root beer, ginger bugs, water kefir and more! Listen in for TMI for all things bubbly wild fermented drinks!
In June I was invited on to UNION OF THE UNWANTED podcast for their episode Homesteading, Farming and Food. If you know the podcast, you know it’s hosted by Midnight Mike from OBDM, Charlie Robinson of Macroaggression and Sam Tripoli of the Tin Foil Hat podcast. Sometime the show brings on some big names, but who I saw when I logged in to our zoom call blew me away. It was none other than lunatic farmer Joel Salatin! Sharing a virtual stage with him was a honor, and I was super nervous. I spoke a couple times, but never managed to get up the nerve to talk to Joel directly. I had questions and comments pass my mind, but I couldn’t make it happen. Watch this episode on Odysee or listen on Apple Podcasts or any other podcatcher.
My experience on Union of the Unwanted inspired me to get together a group of us “little people” together to talk about homesteading on The Greener Postures Podcast. I had a great talk with some great folks in the episode I titled UNION OF THE UNKNOWN HOMESTEADERS. This is my favorite type of conversation. Real people doing what they can to rely more on themselves and less on the systems that don’t serve them. It was a refreshing and inspiring conversation.

What’s Next?

August is all about Preserving the Harvest. That’s what we will be doing, and that’s what I will be sharing on Instagram, YouTube, in the Greener Postures membership and on the podcast. We’ll be working through whatever is abundant in the garden, the orchard and the forest. There are many ways to preserve, and I’ll be utilizing many methods. Canning, dehydrating, fermenting, freezing and more.
